The cafe counter facing the water, with Hotel Kawakyu across the bay
Café de Kawakyu — Shirahama
Nanki-Shirahama · Wakayama · Japan

We're looking
for a barista.

A café & bar on the water in Wakayama, opening 2026.
The room is ready. We are looking for the person who will stand in it.

What we're trying to do

The best café in Wakayama.
Then further.

We think this room can carry it. The counters, the light off the water, the kitchen behind them — that part is already built to a level we are not embarrassed by. What a room like this still needs is someone standing in it who cares about it as much as the people who built it did.

That is the piece we are missing, and it is a person, not a plan. Someone whose job is to take an hour of a guest's day and hand it back better than they gave it — through a cup of coffee, a pot of tea, a glass at night. If that sentence sounds like work worth doing, the rest is learnable.

We are still working out the details, and we would rather do that with the person who stands at the counter than decide it over their head. If you see a better way, tell us — we will take it up.

The place

A counter, facing the sea.

The window seats looking across the water to Hotel Kawakyu
What you would look at all day.

Café de Kawakyu sits on the ground floor of an auberge in Nanki-Shirahama, a hot-spring town on the Pacific coast of Wakayama. Two counters — one along the window, one in the middle — plus tables and a terrace. The old castle-like Hotel Kawakyu stands on the far shore.

Coffee, tea and something sweet through the afternoon; in the evening the same counter becomes a bar. You would not be one of thirty staff. You would be the person who stands here.

The service side. This is where you would be standing.

The work

Roughly, this.

A pour-over in progress, gooseneck kettle and glass brewer
By day.

A short list, made properly. We are not trying to serve fifty things. We are trying to make each one worth the walk — the kind of care you see at a roastery bar, applied to a list you can actually hold in your head.

A barista finishing a pour at the stone counter, sea light behind
White shirt, chinos, one orange accent. That is the whole uniform.

What we can teach you

You would not be working this out alone.

An espresso martini just poured, crema settling
By night.

Skill is not the entry price. It can be added. What cannot be added afterwards is wanting to build the thing in the first place. If you want to stand here and make this place good, write to us — we will teach the rest.

These figures are our current guideline, not a fixed offer. We are still opening, so hours, days off and the shape of the role are open. If you are the right person, we would rather build the role around you than lose you over a number.

Visa

One honest note before you write.

You need a status of residence that already permits this work. We are looking for someone who can start soon, so in practice that means one of these:

What we cannot do right now: we cannot sponsor a brand-new Specified Skilled Worker visa. Japan suspended new intake in the food service field in April 2026 and has not restarted it. We would rather tell you that here than after three emails.

If you are not sure what your status allows, write anyway and tell us what you hold. We will check it properly with our immigration specialist and give you a straight answer.

Who

Who we hope reads this.

Someone who believes an hour spent at a counter can be worth something, and who wants to be the reason it was. Experience behind a bar or a coffee counter helps, but it is not the test.

You do not need a long résumé or perfect Japanese. You need the wish to build this with us rather than arrive at something already finished — and the habit of saying so when you see how it could be better.

Apply

Just write to us.

No form, no résumé template. An email telling us who you are, what you have made, when you could start, and what status of residence you hold is enough. A few photos of your work are welcome. We read everything and we reply.
